Women. Power. Peace.

A Woman’s Place

A woman’s place is in the House—and the Senate!

Within the last thirty years, women have made important gains in government. Today, we hold nearly 17% of seats in Congress, 24% of statewide elected offices, and over 24% of state legislature seats nationwide— nearly double the amount of seats held in 1972.

But while these strides are significant, we still have a long way to go before political parity is achieved.

The United States ranks 74th in the number of women in our national legislature. In any given election year, 50% less women consider running for office than men.  Out of 50 states, 27 have never had a female governor- ever.

Women are more than half of the population. We have more than half of the good ideas. So why aren’t women making at least half of the decisions?

What if women ran the world?

Studies have shown that women legislate differently than men, often acting more collaboratively, seeking out long-term results, and tending to take fewer risks. A clear relationship also exists between women in senior management and corporate financial success. Further, as noted by the Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission and the UN Department for Disarmament Affairs, women play a crucial role in promoting global disarmament, as gender perspective affects the way society views weapons, war, and militarism.

If women ran the world, chances are it would be a more peaceful place.

How would women make a difference?

Women don't speak with one voice. We hold a variety of views on everything from getting more money to spending it- it’s impossible to guess the opinions of an entire sex! What we do know, however, is that the life experiences of all women—however varied-- would bring different perspectives into congressional debate.

All issues are women's issues- foreign policy, the economy, military spending, agriculture, trade and transportation, as well as health, education, and social services. To be truly equal, Congress needs to include the important and unique voices of women.
