WAND Distinguishing Points: Ducheny supports the withdrawal of troops from Iraq and Afghanistan and has been vocal about investing in infrastructure, increasing renewable energy and decreasing dependence on foreign oil. In addition, Ducheny is a strong advocate for protecting Social Security and Medicare, improving the struggling educational system and strengthening the economy. If elected to Congress, her top priorities will be bringing the troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan, creating sustainable jobs and providing children more access to higher education.
The Seat: California’s 51st District includes Imperial County, and the southern part of San Diego County. The district is currently represented by Bob Filner. Ducheny is running against Juan Vargas, a state senator from the 40th District. Vargas ran against Filner in the Democratic primary three times prior without success.
