Representative Kelda Roys (WI-02)

Two-term State Representative Kelda Roys is running for Congress in WI-02!

At age 32, Representative Roys is the youngest woman in the Wisconsin’s State Assembly and serves as Caucus Chair, representing Wisconsin’s 81st District Assembly in Northwestern Dane County. Kelda has continuously proven her great leadership by pushing for legislation on health care, reproductive rights, children’s health, consumer protection, election reform, fiscal responsibility and various other progressive issues. In addition, Kelda fought tirelessly against Gov. Scott Walker’s proposition to remove worker’s rights from public employees and helped ensure that worker’s rights were protected.

Before she was elected to office, Kelda served as the Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin for four years. Furthermore, Kelda helped pass the Compassionate Care for Rape Victims Act which was the first pro-choice law passed in Wisconsin’s State Assembly in over thirty years.

WAND Distinguishing Points: Kelda is a WiLL member who has signed onto the budget letter several times. She is a vocal advocate for cutting the military budget to a reasonable and sustainable size. Additionally, Kelda is a strong proponent for the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan and wants to dramatically decrease the presence of US military troops in Afghanistan immediately. Kelda’s top priorities for the future are jobs, the economy, education, tax fairness and healthcare.

The Seat: Wisconsin’s 2nd District is located in southern Wisconsin and contains the state capitol, Madison. Wisconsin’s 2nd District consists of Dane County, Green County, Colombia County parts of Jefferson County, Sauk County, Rock County and a small section of Walworth County. After redistricting, this remains a strongly Democratic seat.

Wisconsin’s 2nd District is currently represented by WAND/WiLL Woman Tammy Baldwin. With Tammy Baldwin’s run for retiring Sen. Herb Kohl’s seat, Kelda has decided to run. Tammy Baldwin scored 100% on WAND’s last scorecard.

Kelda faces a tough primary ahead of her. She is currently running against two progressive Democrats, state Representative Mark Pocan and Dane County Treasurer Dave Worzala. Mark Pocan and Dave Worzala are not only strong challengers but also well-known Madison politicians. However, Kelda believes that she is well-positioned to pick up voters both in Madison and in other portions of the district. Of particular note-- fifty-five percent or more of primary voters in this district are women.
