Susan Bysiewicz (Senate-CT)
Susan Bysiewicz is running for U.S. Senate in Connecticut to replace retiring Senator Joe Lieberman.
A former WiLL member, Susan served as a state representative for three successive terms from 1992 until 1998. She then served as Connecticut Secretary of State from 1999 to 2011. In 2004, Susan created the “Safe at Home” program, which protects survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault by keeping their addresses confidential.
Susan was raised on a farm in Middletown, Connecticut, and graduated from Yale University and Duke University School of Law. While pursuing her law degree, she wrote Ella: A Biography of Governor Ella Grasso. Grasso is remembered in Connecticut both for pioneering women's roles in politics, and for serving in late stages of fatal cancer.
WAND distinguishing points: Susan is also the only candidate in the CT Senate race to support immediate withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan and had made several strong statements on the issues.
The seat: Connecticut's open seat Senate race will likely be a high-dollar affair, with the state straddling both Boston and New York media markets. Susan faces a tough Democratic primary with both US Rep. Chris Murphy and State Rep William Tong running. On the Republican ticket, attorney Brian Hill has announced his candidacy and it is widely speculated that former US Rep. Chris Shays and 2010 nominee Linda McMahon will enter the race.
