Terri Sewell wins her run-off!
On Tuesday, July 13, Terri Sewell won the runoff for the Democratic nomination for Alabama’s 7th Congressional district. Terri received the most votes in the initial race in June, and in the runoff she beat her opponent with 55% of the vote. In this heavily Democratic district, Terri is widely expected to win in November.
Terri has a lengthy record of achievements that make us confident she will serve her district well. She was the first African-American valedictorian of Selma High School. She went on to graduate with honors from Princeton University. She then received her Masters degree from Oxford University and her law degree from Harvard University. She worked as a securities lawyer at one of New York City’s top law firms for over 10 years.
Upon returning to Alabama, she became one of the only African American public finance lawyers in the state. One of her focuses is educational finance; she represents many of Alabama’s historically black colleges. The 7th district has some of the poorest counties in the nation, and Terri has pledged to work for economic development and job creation. Terri has been completely engaged in every community she’s been a part of but her roots are in Alabama and she says, “I’ve been inspired by President Obama’s call to action … to become more involved in our communities as well as our country.”
We trust Terri will be a welcome peace and security vote from Alabama in Congress.
