Frederica Wilson l FL-17

Florida state Senator Frederica Wilson is seeking to fill the seat of Florida’s 17th Congressional District, which Congressman Kendrick Meek is vacating to run for the U.S. Senate. Senator Wilson succeeded Congressman Meek in the Florida House of Representatives and then the Florida Senate, and now seeks to succeed him in Congress. In her triumph in the crowded August primary, Senator Wilson got twice the number of votes as the second highest vote-getter. There is no Republican running against her in the general election. As a state legislator, Senator Wilson has been committed to quality public education. She is a member of WAND’s Women Legislators’ Lobby (WiLL) and received our Pacesetter award for legislative excellence and leadership. Her tenure in Tallahassee has been recognized both for her effectiveness and her ability to work across party lines. Senator Wilson is also well-known for her collection of flamboyant, glittering hats, which she hopes to soon hang in Washington.

WAND Distinguishing Points: Senator Wilson fully supports WAND’s positions on nuclear weapons, the federal budget, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. She is also a longtime WiLL member.

The Seat: Democrats have an extremely strong advantage in this district. The seat was created in 1983 and this is the first time anyone other than a member of the Meek family will hold it.

Post Election Update: Frederica Wilson won her race!
